  • Excellent concert! sounds like Nirvana circa 1989 before they made it big. Why? The Monkees were a on the job training garage band at best. This early concert from 1967 really displays a more raw sound to their sugar coated hit songs. The result is a stripped and serious edgy sound more in line with Dead Kennedy's and early Clash than anything we have come to accept from the Monkees. Standout tracks are Forget that Girl, with its drum bashing by Mikey Dolenz. You Just may Be the One by Mike Nesmith is also a great bass heavy (Peter Tork) piece that comes off more like the Byrds late 1960s sound than the melodic Monkees studio recording of the same song. Cripple Creek by Peter Tork is also a great Banjo piece at the tale end of the concert.I would suggest anyone who hasn't purchased or seriously heard the Monkees in general to buy this live C/LP first. It will give you a completely different perspective on their myth and reality.
